CHRISTOPHER EASTON

With his background in Fine Arts, Christopher Easton experimented with numerous artforms, eventually specializing in large acrylics on canvas. But his lifelong fascination with Roman and Byzantine mosaics finally inspired him to create contemporary works using this classical -- and today rather rare -- artform. The primary material used in creating his mosaics is antique Venetian glass tessarae dating from 1850 to 1910. In more recent works he has begun including twenty-four karat gold, sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, and semi-precious gems. The use of wooden panels as the mounting medium (not the traditional stone or concrete slabs) allows each piece to be enjoyed in almost any environment and framed to suit any tastes. Mr. Easton’s work shows that mosaics can go beyond the usual architectural installations to stand firmly alongside paintings and sculptures as unique yet very accessible artworks.

Mr. Easton’s mosaics can be found in collections throughout the United States and Europe. Exhibitions in 2002 take place at the Jim Blanchard Studio in New Orleans, Johnson Art Collection in Los Angeles (opening August, 2002), and Galeria des Artistes in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (opening November, 2002). His pieces have been represented by such galleries and showrooms as GASP, Walker/Zanger, Colburn/Schwartz, and S.E.E.M. In the December issue (2001) of Design Times Magazine, Mr. Easton’s mosaics were featured in an article about America’s most vibrant contemporary artworks. Recently his mosaics were featured on E!’s Celebrity Homes.

Christopher Easton currently resides in Los Angeles where, amidst the jammed freeways, unbreathable air, and bad attitudes, he blissfully creates fine art.
